Billy

The physicians could not save you
nor your mother
nor your God.
With only 40 years done
you had so short a time
to learn to be brave,
to think about the years
you would not have,
to focus with the urgency
of diminishing days
on what was important
in what more life you had.

Can we learn from you,
us hangers on
rubbing our eyes and looking back
among the background noise
of sympathetic chat,
what we should do,
what we should focus on
in what more years
we have?
