Breaking The Link
They took away the drips and wires
and as if time itself had stopped
sudden silence filled the room
and he was human again.
She held his hand
as she had all those months,
his face devoid of tubes and tape
retained its alabaster calm
too fragile to be kissed;
he never blinked
or sighed.
For a while he was hers alone
floating in amniotic silence
before pink faded imperceptibly to blue
and his hand grew cold.
