Fiend
Is there something
too deep too dark
in that fearful place
beyond reasoning?
Was there something
back there
he saw I cannot see?
Was there lightning
breaking a starry sky
before the thunder spoke
and the poison fell?
Was he burned before
he sought the flame,
already scarred
before he fanned the blaze?
The fiend lurks
far beyond remembering
in a pit beyond reach:
a pain too strong
for a child to know,
sending him into his mind
out of his mind,
to a safe place.
What did you do to the child
that crippled him
sent him down the other track,
and how did you clothe yourself,
my fiend, in velvet black?
