Insignificance
Seed to seer he grows
in stature and experience,
absorbs the power, the confidence
to turn the handles of the earth
and strut among his peers.
High at the peak
the air is icy clear,
no doubt-clouds yet
gathering to a storm ..
until the first heart-strike
zapping from black clouds
drives him backward
under the arrogant trees,
to learn insignificance
in the undergrowth.
Thin thorny hands entwined,
a desperate foggy stare,
step by struggling step he shrinks
beyond sight, beyond thought, beyond care,
a gibbering insect underfoot
unseen, unheard, un-told,
spits out his final breath.
