Loss
When you looked up furtively
and caught my eye –
then quickly dropped a lacy lash
across my rattling heart –
I among a million others,
loved you.
Star among stars you shone;
yet glowed more softly
as a mother too
touching the crippled children
of the world:
hounded for you vulnerability,
for your tragedies and mistakes,
into the howling throat of death.
When you looked away
that last time,
you took my heart,
and some part of me –
of all of us –
followed the flowering hearse
into the hugging darkness
of eternal loss.
