Millennium

A minute is a segment of
the earth’s revolution
and the months are slices
of its spin round the sun.

Unless you measure
longer lengths of time
by Hayley’s tightly timed returns
then you must keep a record
to know a decade or a century has passed.

Such is the significance
of stars and planets
the big celebration only comes
when a digit on the calendar
flips.
